EHS Wastewater Technician

pOSITION SUMMARY 

The EHS Wastewater Technician operates and maintains the wastewater continuous flow pretreatment plant.  Tests and pre-treats waste waters prior to discharge or shipping, and supports waste management and chemical operations.  Supports production operations through distribution of chemicals, operation of the ion-exchange water purification system, collection and handling of waste chemicals, and environmental/safety related activities.

 Wastewater Duties

Evaluates and improves methods, equipment and procedures relating to DI water, waste treatment, or chemical storage and distribution operations.

·         Operates and maintains the wastewater continuous flow pretreatment plant, and ensures the system is clean, and all discharge parameters are within the set limits of the current industrial users discharge permit.

·         Uses chemical analysis to characterize wastewater.  This may include periodic jar testing, pH meter calibration, and operations of an atomic absorption equipment.

Plans and directs the installation, maintenance, and modification of DI distribution plumbing and pumps.

·         Monitors, cleans, and maintains the filter press system associated with the water plant.

·         Uses chemicals, pumps, tanks, valves, and other means to reduce contaminates in wastewater prior to discharge or shipment.

·         Uses various chemical analysis techniques to test and diagnose operation of ion exchange water purification system.

·         Troubleshoots, diagnoses and repairs equipment in the wastewater plant.

·         Develops vendor resources and coordinates technical assistance as needed.

  

Environmental and Waste Duties 

·         Collects reclaim, non-hazardous and hazardous waste, and prepares all shipping documentation (i.e. manifests, bills of lading, shipping papers, and LDR’s). 

·         Maintains records required by industrial sewer and other chemical or waste-related permits.

·         Communicates with treatment, storage and disposal facilities on all waste matters.

·         Collects samples of materials for analysis to characterize waste and determine proper disposal methods.

·         Inspects facilities for proper chemical storage and waste collection practices and equipment.     

·         Inspects condition of drums and waste containers and transfers content if necessary.

·         Collects samples of material for analysis to characterize waste and determine proper disposal methods.

·         Maintains hazardous and non-hazardous waste disposal profiles.

·         Provides chemical analysis to support hazardous waste management operations.

·         Checks chemical inventory for assurance of sufficient supply.

·         Assists and advises management during planning and emergency response.

·         Assists department manager with assessments of environmental and safety operations, services, and systems.

·         Handles emergency response related to chemical mishaps, and hazardous waste spills.

      Complies with environmental, health, and safety regulations; prepares for audits.

           Operates forklift as needed.

·         Practices good housekeeping in wastewater plant; wears all required PPE as required.

·         Completes required paperwork as required.

·         Completes other tasks and duties as assigned. 

 

 REQUIREMENTS

Minimum of High School diploma or GED required. 

·         Three or more years of experience in a wastewater treatment plant or EHS role.  

·         Must have the following training and/or certificates: RCRA, DOT Hazmat, Hazwoper, OSHA, CPR/First Aid preferred.

·         Operation understanding and knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.

·         Knowledge of EHS and wastewater regulations.

·         Mechanical aptitude required and ability to read and interpret blueprints and operation manuals and understand and perform shop mathematics and electrical principles with knowledge normally acquired in one year of technical training, apprenticeship, or experience beyond high school.

·         Understand symbols and color coding for piping diagrams.

·         Excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.

·         Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
