Primary Function:

Materials Science Research Engineer who will manage the selection, development and analysis of materials and processes for a variety of electronic components. These will include ceramic formulations, metal electrode selections and polymers for binders, plasticizers and coating applications. The successful candidate with have an understanding of 1) basic materials structure-property relationships as applied to electronic devices, 2) materials processing techniques such as milling, tape casting, screen printing, die pressing, and high temperature heat treatments and 3) characterization techniques such as viscometry, thermal analysis, x-ray diffraction, and electron microscopy. The position will also require skills in project planning and tracking, data analysis, written and oral communication of progress, and engineering team participation and management skills.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conducting experiments, including proper materials handling and safe equipment use, numerical evaluation, summarizing results and significant outcomes, and reporting in oral and written presentations and reports
  • Project planning, including setting goals, benchmarking, resourcing and timeline construction
  • Tracking project progress, summarizing results, reporting to collaborators and management in oral and written presentations and reports
  • Transfer of successful projects to production groups with reporting, training and follow-up
  • Consultation with production, sales, marketing, quality and other groups on common issues and problem-solving efforts
  • Materials evaluation and selection, including hazardous chemical handling and disposal
  • Equipment evaluation and selection, including safety evaluation
  • Composing experimental and equipment procedures
  • Scientific literature study, patent evaluation, summarization
  • Management and training of subordinate team members, as required
  • Implementation of management directives for business, ethics, environmental, health, safety, continuous improvement, and workplace well-being.

  • Fundamentals of device electrical measurements
  • Advanced characterization techniques for materials

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Materials Science, Ceramic Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field
  • 1-5 years in a relevant engineering position, preferably in a manufacturing environment.
  • Team experience preferred – working in conjunction with other engineering disciplines is critical. Experience in interactions with mechanical and electrical engineers is desired.
  • Communication and documentation skills are vital.
  • Project management skills using Smartsheet, MS Project or similar are highly desired.
  • Statistical software package skills (Minitab, JMP) are also highly desired.
